Carolyn Gerk is a self-taught artist living and working on Treaty 8 territory near Grimshaw, AB. Operating under the name Velvet Hand Designs, she combines various mediums in her work, including watercolor, ink illustration, fibre arts, and printmaking.

Carolyn’s work features movement and bold lines, seeking to blend artistic mediums into a cohesive, often "organized chaos." She has a passion for exploring social issues, folklore, and film, using her pieces to illustrate well-researched concepts and inspirations—often while infusing a signature sense of humour into the work.

Career Highlights

Carolyn is an active member of the Alberta arts community, with notable achievements including:

  • SNAP Residency: A prestigious artist residency at the Society of Northern Alberta Print-makers in Edmonton.

  • TREX Program: Participation in the Traveling Exhibition Northwest program.

  • Published Works: Her illustrations and designs have been featured in several print magazines as well as children’s storybook, “The Picnic.”
