  • What do a retired Art Teacher (Debbie Monro) and  Nurse Practitioner (Kathy Visser) have in common? They both found (rug) Hooking out East and want to share this "painting with wool" art form out West. Their focus is on teaching you traditional rug hooking skills with wool fabrics and yarns, as well as doing 3D proddy shapes and flowers.

Everything to get you started is available and ready for you downtown at the Peace River ART HUB. You can't miss the room full of yummy colors right in the front lobby. There are specialty dyed wools, affordable Briggs & Little yarns, bulky Merinos, silks, rug hooking kits, backing, frames, patterns, handmade hooks, books and how-to resources. Most supplies are locally and Canadian sourced, with hand lathed and hand forged hooks, built right in Peace River, AB. Specialty hooks are also available for those with hand mobility issues.

Stop in and give it a try, instruction is free. Suitable for almost all ages and skill levels. Peace River Art Club members can try hooking for free on Mondays during our weekly Come Do Art night, from 7 to 9 p.m. And, anyone can come and try during our regular business hours, Thursdays,  Fridays, and Saturdays from 1 to 5 p.m.

So, what are you waiting for? Try (Rug) Hooking with us soon!

  • During a very difficult time in my life, a wise counsellor compassionately suggested, “Look for the pieces of light in your life.” I began taking photography classes so I could capture some of the beauty around me, especially a wild tiger lily or a group of spring leaves back lit by the sun. I didn’t realize it at the time, but photography was becoming my therapy. My desire to share that light led me to start designing cards to accompany my photography exhibits. I am a musician, and I find designing a card to be like writing a song. The images are the melody, and writing a greeting, finding quotes, and writing stories for the back of the card is like composing lyrics.

The Mother Earth Book and the images within are a compilation of the images from my cards. Mother Earth is a luxurious, generous feast for the eyes that celebrates the wild beauty and biodiversity of the Peace region. The book is meant to be both educational and whimsical with captions, quotes and anecdotes, a sprinkling of philosophy and some fascinating fun facts.

  • Metis Dot Art, pottery and fantastic clay gnomes are just a few of the things you will find behind the door of Shannon Johnson Artistry’s space on Artisan’s Lane. With so much to admire, make sure you leave yourself enough time to get lost in Shannon’s creative space.

    About Shannon Johnson

My art journey began at a young age sitting beside my Grandma Nita learning how to craft, paint, draw and even leather work.  I love keeping myself busy with sketching, painting, beading, recreating jewelry, sculpture, rug hooking, pottery and photography.  I have a love for working on projects and learning new forms of art.  I also revisit other forms of art and network with other artists to refresh my work. I feel guided with my faith while working on my pieces.  My Metis culture is a big part of my art.  I am always learning and growing with new techniques and then applying it in my work.  Pointillism is in a majority my painting and drawing. I have also incorporated it into my pottery and rug hooking. Art is where I am able to express myself. My recent work has been in pottery, painting, rug hooking and sculpture. Photography is another love I have to express my art.  To me photographs are another form of drawing or painting . Moving to Peace River with my family has given me more opportunities and it is where I joined the Peace River Art Club. The club has expanded my horizons and broadened my work.

  • What began in the mid-90s as a small home gathering has blossomed into a vibrant community of textile artists. Formally established in 2002 and a proud member of the Canadian Quilters' Association, our guild has spent decades fostering friendships through a shared love of stitching.

From our early days at the local Senior Centre to our current home at The ART HUB, we have navigated everything from major floods to national showcases. Our creative spirit thrives through annual challenges—ranging from paint chip themes to complex triptychs. Most notably, our collaborative project, "Connected Piece By Peace,"was recently featured at Quilt Canada 2024.

Beyond the craft, we are a guild with a mission of service. We provide "compassion quilts" for those in need and host raffles to support local fire departments, cancer research, and community museums. Whether we are hosting professional workshops or local retreats, we remain dedicated to preserving the art of quilting.

We welcome quilters of all levels to join our growing community! We meet at the ART HUB monthly, on the second Tuesday from 7 to 9 p.m.
